Welcome to the Special Education Home Page

The Paso Robles Joint Unified School District Special Education program is committed to encouraging and educating each student so that he/she is able to reach their full potential. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality programs and services available in the least restrictive environment.

Each child referred for special education assessment receives an individual evaluation by a team of experienced, highly qualified professionals working in collaboration with our families.  This assessment determines strengths and needs. Based upon this assessment, the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team meets to determine eligibility and discuss appropriate goals and services. In order to qualify as a student with special needs under the eligibility criteria, the assessment must demonstrate that the student's impairment adversely affects his/her educational performance and therefore requires special education. A full reevaluation of the special education student to determine continued eligibility must be conducted every three years.

Special Education is specially designed instruction to meet the unique needs of each child with disabilities. To be eligible for Special Education services, a child must meet criteria under one of the following categories: specific learning disability, intellectual disability, autism, speech and language impairment, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, visually impaired, emotionally disturbed, orthopedically impaired, other health impaired, traumatic brain injury, and multiple disabilities.

We encourage your thoughts and insights as we work collaboratively toward the goal of assisting students to become independent, active, contributing members of society.
